What this collection actually covers

The French national archive imported into NameForUs covers 1900 through 2022. It comes from INSEE’s 2022 names file. It is a historical collection, not a claim that 2022 is the newest French release available.

In that file, the highest 2022 counts are Gabriel with 4,889 in the male category and Jade with 3,420 in the female category. These are useful facts about the archive’s final year. They do not establish which names lead France today.

Keep a reference year beside every comparison

Suppose you see a French result from 2022 beside an American result from 2025. You can learn that a spelling appears in both datasets, but you are not comparing the same birth cohort. A heading such as ‘Latest imported year in each source’ makes the limitation clear.

If your question requires a direct annual comparison, choose a year covered by both sources. Even then, read the country-specific methods. The French archive’s coverage before 2012 excludes Mayotte, so its geography is not completely unchanged across the full historical span.

Use missing records carefully

The raw French file contains aggregate rare-name entries and entries with an unspecified year. NameForUs excludes those from individual annual name histories. A blank year for your candidate should remain a blank, rather than becoming a confident claim of zero births.

For naming research, this archive works best as historical context: compare recorded spellings, examine earlier usage, and discover candidates you would like to investigate further. If you need current French leaders, consult INSEE’s newer publication directly and keep it distinct from this snapshot. A clearly dated archive is more informative than a page that silently mixes releases into one apparently current list.
